Epilepsy and Seizures: Overview01:24

Epilepsy and Seizures: Overview

1.6K
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease marked by recurrent, unpredictable seizures. These seizures are caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, leading to behavior, sensation, or consciousness alterations. They can also cause transient impairment of awareness, interfering with daily activities.
Various factors can trigger epilepsy, including genetic factors, brain damage, metabolic causes, and unknown etiology. Diagnosis of epilepsy involves electroencephalography (EEG), which...

Antiepileptic Drugs: Potassium Channel Activators

904
Ezocgabine or retigabine, an antiepileptic drug of remarkable efficacy, has revolutionized the management of seizures. It is a potassium channel activator, explicitly targeting the family of Q subtype potassium channels. It enhances the transmembrane potassium currents, regulating neuronal excitability. This action stabilizes the resting membrane potential, a pivotal factor in mitigating the hyperexcitability that characterizes epilepsy.
Ezogabine has gained approval as an adjunctive treatment...

Electroconvulsive Therapy01:30

Electroconvulsive Therapy

1.8K
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While its origins can be traced back to Hippocrates' observations that malaria-induced convulsions alleviated mental illness, modern ECT has evolved significantly from its earlier, more primitive applications. First introduced in 1938 by Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues, ECT involves inducing controlled seizures using electrical currents. In its early...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

5.4K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Antiepileptic Drugs: Glutamate Antagonists

1.2K
Glutamate is a fundamental neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, playing a vital role in neuronal communication and various cognitive processes. Glutamate stands as the principal excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Its presence is crucial for the communication between neurons, underpinning essential processes such as synaptic transmission, neuronal excitability, and plasticity. These functions are vital for higher-order cognitive processes, including learning and memory. The...

Antiepileptic Drugs: Modulators of Neurotransmitter Release Mediated by SV2A Protein01:20

Antiepileptic Drugs: Modulators of Neurotransmitter Release Mediated by SV2A Protein

1.1K
Antiepileptic drugs, such as levetiracetam (Keppra) and brivaracetam (Briviact), have emerged as crucial tools in managing epilepsy. These medications exert their therapeutic effects by targeting the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, a transmembrane glycoprotein primarily found in the brain.
SV2A is a transmembrane glycoprotein located predominantly in the brain, modulating the release of neurotransmitters for neuronal communication. Both levetiracetam and brivaracetam exhibit a high affinity for...

Summary

Patients with epilepsy experience significantly higher rates of sexual dysfunction compared to the general population. These issues, including reduced desire and orgasm difficulties, are linked to lower quality of life and depression in women.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Sexual Medicine

Background:

  • Sexual dysfunction is a prevalent yet often overlooked issue in individuals with epilepsy.
  • Understanding the scope and nature of these problems is crucial for comprehensive patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and types of sexual problems in Norwegian patients with epilepsy.
  • To compare these findings with a representative sample of the general Norwegian population.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire study involving 171 adult inpatients and outpatients with epilepsy and their neurologists.
  • Comparison of results with data from 594 adults from the general Norwegian population who completed the same questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Patients with epilepsy exhibited significantly higher rates of sexual problems: 75.3% in women and 63.3% in men, versus 12.0% and 9.6% in the general population, respectively.
  • Common issues included reduced sexual desire, orgasm problems, erectile dysfunction, and vaginal dryness.
  • Sexual problems were associated with reduced quality of life and depression in women, but not with epilepsy type, onset, or specific antiepileptic drugs.

Conclusions:

  • Sexual dysfunction is substantially more common in patients with epilepsy than in the general population.
  • Multiple factors, likely encompassing both organic and psychosocial elements, contribute to sexual problems in epilepsy.
  • Further research and clinical attention are warranted to address this significant aspect of epilepsy care.
