    Summary

Tuberculosis (TB) detection increased in the Negev, particularly in patients with diabetes, on corticosteroid therapy, or of Bedouin/Yemenite descent. Gastric aspirate cultures are crucial for diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pulmonology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis can be challenging, especially in patients with co-existing conditions.
    • Identifying risk factors and improving diagnostic methods are essential for TB control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the trend of tuberculosis (TB) detection in the Negev region.
    • To identify patient groups at higher risk for TB and evaluate diagnostic methods.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 15 TB cases diagnosed over a one-year period.
    • Review of patient history, clinical presentation, chest X-ray findings, and microbiological cultures (sputum and gastric aspirates).

    Main Results:

    • Tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis increased in the Negev. Four patients had prior corticosteroid treatment.
    • Common presentations included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation, acute respiratory failure, and prolonged fever.
    • Gastric aspirate cultures were more effective (9/15) than sputum cultures (4/15) for TB diagnosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Tuberculosis (TB) should be considered in patients with diabetes, prolonged corticosteroid therapy, and specific ethnic groups (Bedouin, Yemenite) due to higher incidence.
    • Gastric aspirate culture is a valuable diagnostic tool for TB detection and should be incorporated into the workup.
