Caffeine consumption may be linked to insomnia symptoms, but this relationship is influenced by how long you typically sleep. Shorter sleep durations are associated with more insomnia symptoms, especially when combined with higher caffeine intake.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Nutritional Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Previous research indicates individual links between caffeine intake, sleep duration, and insomnia symptoms.
- Understanding population-level associations is crucial for public health recommendations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the population-level association between caffeine consumption and insomnia symptoms.
- To determine if habitual sleep duration modifies the relationship between caffeine and insomnia.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (N=4730).
- Assessed caffeine intake (mg/d) and insomnia symptoms (difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, non-restorative sleep, daytime sleepiness).
- Employed binomial logistic regression, adjusting for covariates, to analyze relationships with sleep duration.
Main Results:
- Mean caffeine consumption was 176.6 mg/d; mean sleep duration was 6.8 hours.
- While unadjusted models showed caffeine linked to all insomnia symptoms, adjusted models found a trend with difficulty staying asleep.
- Sleep duration was inversely associated with insomnia symptoms. Non-restorative sleep showed an interaction between caffeine and sleep duration.
Conclusions:
- The association between caffeine consumption and insomnia symptoms is dependent on habitual sleep duration.
- Public health strategies addressing insomnia should consider both caffeine intake and sleep habits.

Melatonin congeners like ramelteon (Rozerem) and tasimelteon (Hetlioz) selectively bind to melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) and thus mimic the actions of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Tasimelteon is primarily used for non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder, common in blind patients. They are also used to treat conditions like insomnia...
