Obesity

1.5K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

5.4K
Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra....

Summary

Central body fat, measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BEI), is linked to high-grade prostate cancer (HGPC). This method better explains obesity

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Metabolic Health

Background:

  • Obesity is a growing concern in prostate cancer (PC) research.
  • Understanding the role of body fat distribution is crucial for risk stratification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the relationship between body fat distribution, measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BEI), and high-grade prostate cancer (HGPC).

Main Methods:

  • Prospective analysis of 323 patients undergoing prostate biopsy.
  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BEI) performed pre-biopsy.
  • Logistic regression analysis incorporating PSA, BMI, and body fat percentages.

Main Results:

  • High-grade prostate cancer (HGPC) was diagnosed in 37 patients (27.2%).
  • HGPC patients exhibited higher age, PSA, and central body fat percentage (p<0.05).
  • Central body fat percentage, age, and PSA were independent risk factors for HGPC.

Conclusions:

  • Central body fat, assessed via BEI, offers a better explanation for the obesity-HGPC link than BMI.
  • BEI is a valuable tool for investigating body fat distribution in relation to prostate cancer.
