Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) primarily center around electronically documenting patients' health information within a single healthcare organization or practice. They contain essential clinical data related to a patient's medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, lab results, and other pertinent information relevant to the specific encounter or episode of care. EMRs are designed to streamline documentation and workflow processes within individual healthcare...

Nursing Ethical Principles II

2.5K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.
Initially, Mr. John's...

Area of Science:

  • Health Informatics
  • Patient Information Systems
  • Digital Health Transition

Background:

  • Healthcare information is shifting from paper to digital formats.
  • Electronic information is expected to be the primary source in the future.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate patient usage and perceptions of medication package inserts.
  • To assess patient attitudes towards a transition to electronic patient information leaflets.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire survey (n=406) and interviews (n=15) were conducted in South-Eastern Sweden.
  • Data collection occurred between October and November 2014.

Main Results:

  • 52% of respondents occasionally read leaflets, 37% always do, and 11% never do.
  • 41% of patients favored electronic leaflets, 32% were hesitant, and 26% were neutral.
  • Age and gender influenced attitudes; concerns were raised regarding elderly patients' access to electronic information.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of patients prefer paper leaflets, despite positive attitudes towards electronic versions.
  • Developing user-friendly eHealth services and patient education can facilitate the transition to electronic patient information leaflets.
