- Changes in FMD (%FMD) and TBR (ΔTBR) were analyzed after antihypertensive treatment in 33 patients.
Main Results:
- Age, LDL-cholesterol, and TBR were independently associated with %FMD.
- A significant inverse correlation was found between changes in FMD and TBR after treatment (r=-0.558, P<0.001).
- ΔTBR was the sole independent associate of Δ%FMD in hypertensive patients.
Conclusions:
- Vascular inflammation in carotid arteries, evaluated by [18F]-FDG-PET/CT, is an independent correlate of decreased endothelial function (%FMD).
- This study suggests a direct association between vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in humans.
- Noninvasive imaging of vascular inflammation may offer new insights into atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease pathogenesis.
