Summary

FibroScan, a non-invasive liver test, showed higher fibrosis scores in women postpartum after preeclampsia compared to healthy controls. Further research is needed to confirm its clinical utility in managing preeclampsia.

Background:

  • Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication affecting maternal and fetal health.
  • Non-invasive methods for assessing potential complications in preeclampsia are of clinical interest.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate FibroScan (transient elastography) for liver fibrosis assessment in women with preeclampsia.
  • To compare FibroScan results between preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational case-control study including 32 women with preeclampsia and 16 normotensive controls.
  • FibroScan performed postpartum (1-7 days) by a hepatologist.
  • Standard diagnostic criteria used for preeclampsia diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher liver fibrosis scores (mean 4.57 kPa vs. 3.66 kPa, P=0.01) were observed in women with preeclampsia compared to controls.

  • Additional research is warranted to explore FibroScan's role in preeclampsia evaluation and management.
