Summary

Chronic use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) significantly increases the risk of moderate hyponatremia in elderly patients. This study highlights a prevalence of 18.7%-46.3% in long-term PPI users.

Context:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely prescribed medications.

Purpose:

  • To assess the association between chronic PPI exposure (≥1 year) and moderate hyponatremia in patients over 65 years.

  • This study included 145 elderly patients, with 48 exposed to PPIs long-term.
