The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.2K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

Tiagabine is an anticonvulsant used for epilepsy and anxiety. Limited studies show variable serum levels, necessitating dose adjustments for liver impairment and therapeutic drug monitoring.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical Pharmacy
  • Neuroscience

Context:

  • Tiagabine, a second-generation anticonvulsant, has been available in France since 1997.
  • It is also used off-label for anxiety treatment.
  • Significant inter-individual variability in serum concentrations is noted, with few studies correlating exposure with efficacy or toxicity.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the evidence supporting Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) for tiagabine.
  • To highlight the need for dose adaptation in cases of hepatic insufficiency.
  • To establish therapeutic serum concentration ranges for tiagabine.

Summary:

  • Tiagabine exhibits considerable variability in serum concentrations among patients.
  • Therapeutic doses typically result in serum levels between 20-100 μg/L (50-250 nmol/L).

  • Hepatic insufficiency mandates careful dose adjustment.
  • Impact:

    • Understanding tiagabine pharmacokinetics is crucial for optimizing treatment outcomes.
    • Further research is needed to fully establish the role and benefits of TDM for tiagabine.
    • This information aids clinicians in managing tiagabine therapy, particularly in patients with liver conditions.
