Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

12.9K
Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.

Alveolates are a group of organisms recognized by the presence of alveoli, which are cytoplasmic sacs located beneath the cell membrane. While their function remains uncertain, alveoli may help regulate water balance by controlling how much water enters and leaves the cell. In dinoflagellates, these structures may serve as armor plates. There are three major types of alveolates: ciliates, which move using cilia; dinoflagellates, which use flagella for movement; and apicomplexans, which are...

Bacterial Phylum Planctomycetes

524
Planctomycetes are a group of morphologically distinct bacteria predominantly classified into two orders: Planctomycetales and Brocadiales. These gram-negative bacteria exhibit unique features, including division by budding and the presence of stalks or appendages. Their cells are often found in rosette arrangements, and they are notable for possessing an S-layer in their cell envelope, which is relatively uncommon among bacteria. Additionally, Planctomycetes frequently exhibit intracellular...

Epiphytes, Parasites, and Carnivores

Plants often form mutualistic relationships with soil-dwelling fungi or bacteria to enhance their roots’ nutrient uptake ability. Root-colonizing fungi (e.g., mycorrhizae) increase a plant’s root surface area, which promotes nutrient absorption. While root-colonizing, nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., rhizobia) convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia (NH3), making nitrogen available to plants for various biological functions. For example, nitrogen is essential for the...

Hybrid Zones02:29

Hybrid Zones

22.5K
Hybrid zones are narrow regions where two closely related species interact, mate, and produce hybrids. Relative to either parent species, hybrids may possess distinct phenotypic or genetic differences that impact their survival and reproductive success. The genetic variances introduced by hybridization influence species diversity and speciation processes within the hybrid zone.

Excavata is a diverse group of protists that includes both chemoorganotrophic and phototrophic species, with some thriving in anaerobic environments. Among the key groups within Excavata are diplomonads and parabasalids, which are flagellated protists that lack mitochondria and chloroplasts. These microorganisms typically inhabit anoxic environments, such as the intestines of animals, where they exist either symbiotically or as parasites, relying on fermentation for energy production. Some...

Summary

This study compiles information on Colombian fungus gnats (Keroplatidae), adding new records for five genera. It enhances understanding of this diverse insect family in the region.

Area of Science:

  • Entomology
  • Biodiversity studies
  • Insect taxonomy

Background:

  • The Keroplatidae family, commonly known as fungus gnats, comprises 86 genera and approximately 950 species globally.
  • The family is divided into three subfamilies: Arachnocampinae, Macrocerinae, and Keroplatinae.
  • In Colombia, Macrocerinae and Keroplatinae are present, with five described species across four genera.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compile existing data on Keroplatidae species found in Colombia.
  • To document new genus records for Keroplatidae within Colombia.
  • To contribute to the knowledge of Neotropical insect biodiversity.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review and synthesis of available taxonomic and distributional data.
  • Examination of museum collections and field records (implied).
