  • Acute leukaemia (AL) is a challenging bone marrow cancer in hematopoietic progenitors.
  • Human AL treatment has advanced with chemotherapy, but canine AL progress is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of chemotherapy in canine acute leukaemia.
  • To determine survival times and response rates in dogs with AL.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records from three veterinary hospitals.
  • Analysis of 50 dogs diagnosed with acute leukaemia based on specific criteria.
  • Assessment of treatment responses and survival durations for dogs receiving chemotherapy.

Main Results:

  • Thirty-six dogs received chemotherapy, with 23 achieving a response (median 56 days).
  • Median survival for treated dogs was poor at 55 days.
  • Untreated or palliatively treated dogs had a median survival of 7.5 days.
  • Chemoresistance developed rapidly in most dogs.

  • Current chemotherapy protocols offer limited survival benefit for canine acute leukaemia.
