Summary

Background:

Nursing-sensitive quality indicators are crucial for effective nursing management.
No objective evaluation of NICU nursing quality in China was previously available.
This study addresses the need for scientifically validated quality indicators in Chinese NICUs.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and identify nursing-sensitive quality indicators for neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in China.
To ensure these indicators align with current medical practices and Chinese healthcare contexts.
To provide a foundation for monitoring and improving nursing quality in Chinese NICUs.

Main Methods:

A modified Delphi technique was employed, involving two rounds of expert panels.
Literature review identified 21 potential indicators, with 13 selected for expert discussion.
39 NICU experts from 18 tertiary hospitals across six provinces participated.

Main Results:

Eleven nursing-sensitive quality indicators for NICU care were identified and validated.
Key indicators include infection rates, extubation errors, medication errors, pain management, and pressure ulcer incidence.
Other validated indicators cover noise levels, nurse-to-bed ratios, nurse experience, and retinopathy incidence.

Conclusions:

The 11 identified indicators are suitable for current clinical practice in Chinese NICUs.
These indicators provide a robust framework for nursing management and quality monitoring.
The study establishes a basis for objective evaluation and enhancement of NICU nursing quality in China.
