Summary

Post-thoracic surgery in males can lead to mediastinal thymic cysts. These rare cysts, often multilocular, may be linked to surgical trauma, as indicated by these case studies.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Science
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • Thymic cysts are rare, and their etiology is not fully understood.
  • Mediastinal masses can occur in pediatric and adolescent populations.
  • Previous thoracic surgery is a potential risk factor for certain mediastinal pathologies.

Observation:

  • Three male patients aged 8 months to 18 years developed mediastinal thymic cysts after thoracic surgery.
  • Two multilocular thymic cysts were identified via radiography and computed tomography.
  • One cyst was incidentally discovered during cardiac surgery.

Findings:

  • These three cases represent 15% of all surgically removed or autopsy-identified thymic cysts at the authors' institution over 27 years.
  • The findings suggest a potential association between thymic cyst development and prior surgical trauma to the thorax.
  • This observation aligns with previously reported cases in male adolescents and adults.

Implications:

  • The study highlights a possible iatrogenic cause for thymic cyst formation in pediatric and adolescent males.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm the link between thoracic surgery and thymic cyst development.
  • Clinicians should consider surgical history when evaluating mediastinal masses in young males.
