    A novel caffeate compound, (E)-erythro-syringylglyceryl caffeate, was identified in Nardostachys chinensis roots. This study also reports known phenolic compounds, expanding the known chemical constituents of this plant genus.

    • The phytochemical investigation of Nardostachys chinensis roots and rhizomes yielded a new caffeate derivative and several known phenolic compounds.
    • The structural elucidation confirmed the identity of all isolated compounds.
    • This study significantly contributes to the chemotaxonomic understanding of the Nardostachys genus by reporting novel and extended occurrences of phenolic compounds.
