Microorganisms in Medicine and Therapeutics01:29

Microorganisms in Medicine and Therapeutics

1.3K
Microorganisms play a fundamental role in vaccine development, gene therapy, and therapeutic production. Their biological properties are harnessed to advance medicine and public health. Beyond immunization, microorganisms contribute to gut health, antibiotic synthesis, and genetic disease treatment.Live Attenuated and Inactivated VaccinesLive attenuated vaccines, such as the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, utilize weakened forms of pathogens to closely resemble natural infections.

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

4.2K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I

1.2K
Tuberculosis, often called TB, is a contagious illness primarily caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly affects the lung parenchyma but can also impact other body parts.
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.

Medical management of tuberculosis (TB) patients involves a comprehensive approach that includes diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The specific strategies can vary depending on the type of tuberculosis (latent or active), the patient's overall health status, and other considerations.
Latent tuberculosis infection occurs when TB bacteria are present in a person's body, but are not causing illness or symptoms. It is not contagious, and preventive treatment is crucial to avoid the...

Development of Immunocompetence01:22

Development of Immunocompetence

1.1K
The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Poliomyelitis eradication is nearing global success, with India and Pakistan being key areas of persistent transmission.
  • India's decade-long polio eradication initiative initially reduced cases but faced a significant rise in 2002.
  • The resurgence highlights ongoing challenges in controlling wild poliovirus circulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the progress and impact of polio eradication measures in India.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of corrective actions implemented after the 2002 setback.
  • To assess the feasibility of achieving complete polio eradication.

Main Methods:

  • Review of polio eradication strategies and implementation data.
  • Analysis of epidemiological trends and case surveillance.
  • Evaluation of operational aspects and vaccine characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Corrective measures implemented appear to be yielding positive results.
  • A comprehensive evaluation of various eradication facets and their impact has been conducted.
  • The review indicates a potential for success in controlling the disease.

Conclusions:

  • Poliomyelitis transmission is currently controlled in India.
  • Complete eradication remains a challenge due to operational gaps and vaccine virus properties.
  • Sustained efforts are crucial to overcome remaining obstacles for global polio eradication.
