Summary

This study shows that primary 360° encircling buckling surgery is a successful treatment for chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The procedure achieved anatomical retinal re-attachment in most cases, offering a viable option for long-standing retinal detachment.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of primary 360° encircling broad buckle surgery for chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
  • To evaluate anatomical re-attachment rates in eyes with long-standing RRD treated with this method.

Main Methods:

  • 210 eyes with RRD lasting over six months and PVR up to C3 (CP3 focal) were included.
  • Surgical technique involved trans-scleral cryopexy, a 360° encircling buckle (276-279 tire), and subretinal fluid drainage.
  • No primary vitreous surgery was performed.

  • Anatomical retinal re-attachment was achieved in 85.74% of the treated eyes.
  • The study demonstrated a high success rate for the chosen surgical approach.
