Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

26.1K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Test for Homogeneity01:23

Test for Homogeneity

2.5K
The goodness–of–fit test can be used to decide whether a population fits a given distribution, but it will not suffice to decide whether two populations follow the same unknown distribution. A different test, called the test for homogeneity, can be used to conclude whether two populations have the same distribution. To calculate the test statistic for a test for homogeneity, follow the same procedure as with the test of independence. The hypotheses for the test for homogeneity can...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

13.6K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

1.5K
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Testing a Claim about Population Proportion01:24

Testing a Claim about Population Proportion

4.0K
A complete procedure for testing a claim about a population proportion is provided here.
There are two methods of testing a claim about a population proportion: (1) Using the sample proportion from the data where a binomial distribution is approximated to the normal distribution and (2) Using the binomial probabilities calculated from the data.
The first method uses normal distribution as an approximation to the binomial distribution. The requirements are as follows: sample size is large...

Infertility in Males01:23

Infertility in Males

655
Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Sociology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Men's engagement in HIV testing is crucial for effective "test and treat" strategies in generalized epidemics.
  • Understanding cultural and community influences on men's HIV testing uptake is vital for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify cultural factors and community processes influencing men's HIV testing uptake in Eastern Africa.
  • To analyze barriers and facilitators to men's participation in HIV testing within a "test and treat" trial.

Main Methods:

  • Participant observation at mobile community health campaigns (n=28).
  • Focus group discussions with community members (n=8 groups).
  • In-depth interviews with care providers (n=50), leaders (n=32), and community members (n=112) in Kenya and Uganda.

Main Results:

  • Structural and cultural barriers, including male mobility and gender norms, limit men's HIV testing compared to women.
  • Men's testing "by proxy" and questioning of traditional masculine norms were observed.
  • Flexible testing hours and mobile locations facilitated men's participation, alongside the perceived benefits of antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Conclusions:

  • Mobile HIV testing and flexible hours partially address barriers to men's uptake.
  • Transformations in gender norms regarding HIV testing and care-seeking are emerging and require support.
