  • In-depth interviews were conducted in 2012 with researchers from 25 CBPR projects in the Southeast US.
  • Projects were assessed based on community participation across 13 research components.

Main Results:

  • Community participation varied significantly across projects, from 2-3 components to all 13.
  • Researchers' approaches to community inclusion ranged from deliberate integration to ensuring basic opportunities for participation.

Conclusions:

  • A standardized rubric for CBPR is needed to define effective and efficient approaches.
  • Limited community participation may lead to adverse social consequences for communities.
