Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Hepatology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • The link between autoimmune diseases like Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has long been suspected.
  • Previous research lacked large-scale data to confirm this association.
  • This study leverages a national health database to investigate the relationship between SLE and HBV carrier status.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between SLE and being a hepatitis B carrier.
  • To compare the prevalence of hepatitis B carriers in SLE patients versus a control group.
  • To identify potential risk factors or correlations in this association.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed using data from Clalit Health Services.
  • Included 5018 SLE patients and 25,090 age- and sex-matched controls.
  • Statistical analyses included Chi-square, t tests, and multivariate logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • Hepatitis B carrier rates were significantly higher in SLE patients (0.9%) compared to controls (0.56%).
  • A significant association between SLE and hepatitis B was confirmed (OR = 1.828).
  • The association was also noted in individuals with lower socioeconomic status.

Conclusions:

  • Patients diagnosed with SLE exhibit a higher prevalence of hepatitis B carrier state.
  • This large-scale study provides robust evidence supporting an association between SLE and hepatitis B.
  • Further research may explore the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of this link.
