Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Drug Therapy

376
The advent of drug therapy has profoundly shaped modern mental health care, providing targeted treatments for a range of psychological disorders. Psychotherapeutic drugs, classified into antianxiety, antidepressant, and antipsychotic medications, address symptoms across anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

668
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Area of Science:

  • Digital Health
  • Mental Health Technology
  • Mobile Health Applications

Background:

  • Many adolescents and adults do not seek professional mental health treatment.
  • Smartphone applications (apps) present a potential avenue for accessible mental health support.
  • There is a need to understand the landscape of available mental health apps.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize mental health applications available to smartphone users.
  • To identify the purported purposes and approaches of these apps.
  • To assess the information provided regarding app effectiveness, privacy, and security.

Main Methods:

  • A content analysis was performed on app descriptions from the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores.
  • Ten key mental health terms were used for searching.
  • The first 20 relevant app descriptions per search term were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Out of 300 applications, 208 (70%) were relevant to mental health or stress.
  • The primary purposes were symptom relief (41%) and education (18%).
  • Many apps focused on mild symptoms (e.g., relaxation), lacked effectiveness data (59%), and omitted privacy information (89%).

Conclusions:

  • The effectiveness and safety of readily available mental health apps are uncertain.
  • Clinicians should guide patients on app selection and usage.
  • Development of patient-centered, evidence-based mental health apps requires strategic policy and research.
