Abstract:
In brief: When an abnormal stress is applied to the knee joint, menisci, ligaments, or articular cartilage may be damaged. In skeletally immature people the growth plate is more likely to be injured than the soft-tissue supporting structures. Physicians must maintain a high index of suspicion in these individuals and use specific aids for diagnosis such as stress views to differentiate between ligament and growth plate injuries. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment help minimize long-term growth abnormalities and disability.
