Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

6.6K
Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Primary renal leiomyosarcomas are rare, aggressive malignancies, representing 1-2% of adult malignant renal tumors.
  • Despite being the most common renal sarcoma subtype (50-60%), clinical and radiological data on renal leiomyosarcoma remain limited.
  • Distinguishing renal leiomyosarcoma from renal cell carcinoma based solely on imaging is challenging due to non-specific radiological features.

Observation:

  • A 74-year-old female presented with a large abdominal mass.
  • Previous imaging in 2007 identified a renal mass initially diagnosed as renal cell carcinoma but pathologically confirmed as low-grade renal leiomyosarcoma.
  • In 2012, a significantly larger retroperitoneal mass was excised and diagnosed as high-grade leiomyosarcoma.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced a rapid progression from a low-grade renal leiomyosarcoma to a high-grade retroperitoneal mass within approximately one year.
  • This case demonstrates the potential for aggressive transformation in primary renal leiomyosarcomas.
  • The initial misdiagnosis highlights the limitations of imaging in differentiating renal tumors.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of thorough pathological examination for accurate diagnosis of renal masses.
  • It suggests the need for vigilant follow-up of patients diagnosed with renal leiomyosarcoma due to the risk of aggressive transformation.
  • Further research into the biological behavior and optimal management of renal leiomyosarcomas is warranted.
