Summary
A rare case of Loa loa filariasis occurred in a 27-year-old patient with a painful red eye. Surgical removal of the living adult worm from the anterior chamber confirmed the diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Parasitology
- Tropical Medicine
Background:
- Loa loa filariasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by flies, typically affecting subcutaneous and ocular tissues.
- Intraocular involvement, particularly with a live adult worm in the anterior chamber, is exceptionally rare.
Observation:
- A 27-year-old patient presented with acute painful red eye symptoms.
- Biomicroscopy revealed a mobile, adult Loa loa worm within the anterior chamber of the right eye.
Findings:
- The adult Loa loa worm was successfully surgically extracted under local anesthesia.
- Post-extraction parasitological analysis confirmed the species as Loa loa, establishing the diagnosis of ocular filariasis.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of considering rare parasitic infections in ophthalmology, even in non-endemic areas.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing intraocular Loa loa to prevent vision loss.
- Further research into the prevalence and clinical manifestations of ocular filariasis is warranted.

Mitral Stenosis I: Introduction
1.1K
Mitral Valve Stenosis (MVS) is a heart condition where the mitral valve narrows, impeding blood circulation from the left atrium to the left ventricle. The etiology and pathophysiology of this condition are multifaceted, leading to a cascade of cardiovascular complications.Causes of Mitral Valve StenosisRheumatic Heart Disease: It is the main cause of mitral valve stenosis, particularly in developing nations. This condition arises from rheumatic fever, an inflammatory illness resulting from...

Chambers of the Heart
11.0K
The human heart is a complex organ made up of four chambers: the right and left atria and the right and left ventricles. These internal chambers are separated by partitions known as the interatrial and interventricular septa. The exterior of the heart features a groove known as the coronary sulcus that demarcates the atria from the ventricles, while the anterior and posterior interventricular sulci distinguish between the two ventricles.

Mitral Regurgitation I: Introduction
863
Mitral regurgitation is characterized by the backward circulation of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium during systole, a phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart contracts and pumps blood out of the chambers. This abnormal flow occurs primarily due to the dysfunction of the mitral valve or its supporting structures, which include the mitral leaflets, chordae tendineae, annulus, and papillary muscles.Etiology and Mechanisms:Primary Mitral Regurgitation: This type arises from...
