Maternal mortality rates significantly decrease with higher GDP per capita, health expenditure, female literacy, and skilled birth attendance in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Improving these factors is key to promoting maternal health.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Socioeconomics
- Global Health
Background:
- Maternal mortality is a key indicator of socioeconomic development.
- The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) faces significant disparities in health outcomes.
- Understanding factors influencing maternal mortality in the EMR is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and analyze effective factors influencing maternal mortality.
- To examine the relationship between socioeconomic and health indicators and maternal mortality in the EMR.
Main Methods:
- An analytical model was developed based on a literature review.
- Panel data from 22 EMR countries (2004-2011) were analyzed.
- Fixed effects method was used to estimate model parameters using WHO data.
Main Results:
- Significant disparities in social, economic, and health indicators exist among EMR countries.
- Higher GDP per capita, health expenditure, and female literacy rates were associated with lower maternal mortality.
- Increased skilled birth attendance also showed a significant negative relationship with maternal mortality.
Conclusions:
- Economic development and increased health sector resources are vital for reducing maternal mortality.
- Improving delivery services with trained staff and enhancing primary care are essential.
- Elevating women's education and knowledge is a critical policy factor for maternal health promotion.
