Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Kinesiology
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Systematic literature review on non-gait-related optoelectronic trunk movement analysis.
  • Analysis from clinical and methodological perspectives.
  • Identifies the current state of research in trunk motion analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current body of literature on optoelectronic trunk movement analysis.
  • To evaluate existing studies from both clinical and methodological viewpoints.
  • To identify research gaps and areas for future development in trunk motion analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic search of Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed databases for papers published until December 31st, 2015.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on trunk movement analysis using optoelectronic systems, excluding gait-related studies.
  • Performed reference searches and consulted experts to ensure comprehensive data acquisition.

Main Results:

  • 45 relevant studies were identified out of 8431 papers, involving 1334 participants (57.9% healthy, age 8-85).
  • Most studies divided the trunk into three segments, with few analyzing the whole trunk or individual vertebrae.
  • The lumbar spine and low back pain were the most frequently studied region and pathology, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Literature on trunk motion analysis is relatively scarce, with sparse clinical findings.
  • While research on lumbar spine and low back pain is present, small sample sizes limit generalizability.
  • Optoelectronic systems are increasingly used for spine movement evaluation, but standardized protocols are lacking.
