Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction--an independent risk factor for weaning failure from mechanical ventilation

- Diastolic dysfunction grade correlated with BNP levels (P<0.001). BNP levels were higher in patients who failed weaning (643±382 ng/l vs. 361±523 ng/l, P=0.008).
- Diastolic dysfunction (OR 11.23) and respiratory frequency/tidal volume (OR 1.05) were independent predictors of weaning failure.
Conclusions:
- LV diastolic dysfunction is a significant independent predictor of weaning failure.
- Pre-weaning assessment of LV diastolic function can help identify high-risk patients.
- Integrating diastolic function assessment into weaning protocols may improve patient outcomes.
