Electron Microscope Tomography and Single-particle Reconstruction

3.0K
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to determine the 3D structure of biological samples with the help of techniques such as electron microscope tomography and single-particle reconstruction. While single-particle reconstruction can examine macromolecules and macromolecular complexes in vitro conditions only, tomography permits the study of cell components or small cells in vivo.

Computed Tomography

9.3K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Summary

The Test of Memory Malingering Trial 1 (TOMM1) effectively identifies malingered neurocognitive dysfunction in forensic samples. This shorter test offers comparable accuracy to the full TOMM, improving evaluation efficiency.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Psychological Assessment

Background:

  • Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) are crucial in forensic evaluations to detect response bias.
  • The full Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) is a widely used PVT, but its length can be a limitation.
  • Shorter, efficient PVTs are needed in forensic settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the Test of Memory Malingering Trial 1 (TOMM1) as a standalone Performance Validity Test (PVT).
  • To compare the effectiveness of TOMM1 against the full Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) in a criminal forensic sample.

Main Methods:

  • 119 individuals in a forensic hospital setting were evaluated.
  • Criterion groups were established based on performance on other PVTs: Malingered Neurocognitive Dysfunction (+MND), possible MND (pMND), and no MND (-MND).
  • Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analyses compared TOMM1 and TOMM performance.

Main Results:

  • TOMM1 demonstrated high predictive accuracy for the full TOMM decision rules (AUC = .92).
  • TOMM1 showed robust accuracy in predicting failure on two PVTs (AUC = .80), with specific cutoffs yielding acceptable sensitivity and specificity.
  • Adjusted analyses indicated improved TOMM1 diagnostic utility (AUC = .84).

Conclusions:

  • The TOMM1 is a valid and effective PVT in criminal forensic evaluations.
  • TOMM1 offers a more time-efficient alternative to the full TOMM without compromising accuracy.
  • These findings support the use of TOMM1 to enhance efficiency in forensic evaluations.
