Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) prevalence in Russia is significantly underestimated, with symptomatic low limb ischemia (LLI) affecting 0.51% of those over 40. Real PAD numbers may be 1.5-5%, indicating a critical need for a national PAD registry.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the prevalence of symptomatic patients with low limb ischemia (LLI) in the Russian Federation in 2014.
  • To assess the prevalence of atherosclerosis of extremities (ICD-10 code I70.2) and thromboangiitis obliterans (ICD-10 code I73.1).

Main Methods:

  • A nationwide survey distributed questionnaires to regional health departments.
  • Data collected on the prevalence of ICD-10 codes I70.2 and I73.1, categorized by ischemia severity (I-IIa vs. III-IV/CLI).
  • Information on major amputations and mortality associated with LLI was also gathered.

Main Results:

  • Responses were received from all federal regions, covering approximately 71 million people.
  • 174,125 cases of symptomatic LLI were identified.
