Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the evidence-based quality of commercial weight loss mobile applications.
  • To examine the involvement of healthcare experts in app development.
  • To evaluate the scientific validation of these digital health tools.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic search of app stores for weight loss/management apps (July 2014-July 2015).
  • Independent review by three raters to identify relevant apps, including pediatric-focused ones.
  • Assessment of apps based on evidence-based strategies, expert involvement, and scientific evaluation.

Main Results:

  • 393 apps were reviewed; self-monitoring was the most common feature (35.3%).
  • Few apps included personalized feedback (1.8%), social support (5.3%), or motivational strategies (7.1%).
  • Less than 1% of apps were scientifically evaluated, and only 0.3% reported healthcare expert involvement.

Conclusions:

  • Commercial weight loss apps frequently lack essential evidence-based features and expert input.
  • The scientific validity and safety of many weight loss apps are questionable.
  • Development of high-quality, evidence-based mobile health apps requires collaboration among stakeholders.
