Summary

Optimizing rectal swab techniques for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria screening is crucial. Nylon-flocked or polyurethane-cellular-foam swabs and intraanal sampling generally yield higher bacterial recovery, though perianal sampling may be better for specific bacteria like A. baumannii.
