Summary

Echinococcus multilocularis, a parasite causing alveolar echinococcosis, was detected in a fox in Turkey's Erzurum province. Molecular analysis confirmed the fox isolate matched European strains, marking the first PCR-based identification in Turkey.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and molecular characteristics of Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes in Erzurum, Turkey.
  • To determine the genetic relationship of the local E. multilocularis isolate with other global isolates.
  • To provide molecular confirmation for E. multilocularis in Turkey.

Main Methods:

  • Fecal samples from 10 foxes were examined using the sedimentation and counting technique.
  • Adult worms recovered from infected foxes were subjected to morphological analysis.
  • Species-specific PCR and 12S rRNA gene sequencing were employed for molecular identification and comparison.

  • Echinococcus multilocularis was identified in one out of ten foxes examined.
  • Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed the species as E. multilocularis.
