Area of Science:

  • Psychological Therapies
  • Mental Health Training
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Background:

  • The UK's Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative trained many therapists in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for depression and anxiety.
  • Limited data exists on IAPT CBT trainee retention and workplace skill application post-training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To survey past trainees of the IAPT High Intensity CBT Course at King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN).
  • To assess the retention and practice of CBT skills among IAPT High Intensity CBT Course graduates.

Main Methods:

  • A follow-up survey was distributed to 212 past trainees from 6 cohorts (2008-2014).
  • A high response rate of 92.5% (196 participants) was achieved.

Main Results:

  • 79% of trainees remained in IAPT services post-training, with 94% primarily practicing CBT.
  • 61% advanced to CBT supervisor roles; 23% moved into other senior positions.
  • Shortcomings were noted in using out-of-office interventions, disorder-specific measures, and therapy recordings.

Conclusions:

  • Graduates of the IAPT High Intensity CBT Course demonstrate strong retention within IAPT services and consistent application of CBT.
  • Gaps in the routine implementation of NICE-recommended treatments were identified, potentially hindering patient recovery.
  • Findings have implications for the ongoing IAPT program and future large-scale mental health training initiatives.
