Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring01:23

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

3.9K
Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...

Summary

Wearable activity trackers show varied accuracy for energy expenditure and sleep tracking. Polar Loop and Fitbit Charge HR offer reasonable energy expenditure estimates, while Polar Loop, Misfit Shine, and Fitbit Flex are most valid for sleep period time.

Area of Science:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Wearable Technology

Background:

  • Wearable activity trackers are increasingly popular for monitoring physical activity and sleep.
  • Assessing the accuracy of these devices under real-world, free-living conditions is crucial for their reliable use.
  • Previous studies have often evaluated trackers in laboratory settings, which may not reflect actual usage patterns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the concurrent validity of eight different wearable activity trackers.
  • To assess their accuracy in measuring energy expenditure (EE) and sleep period time (SPT).
  • To determine device performance under free-living conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Ninety-five healthy adults (34 men, 61 women) participated in the study.
  • Eight wearable monitors (Nike+ FuelBand SE, Garmin VivoFit, Misfit Shine, Fitbit Flex, Jawbone UP, Polar Loop, Fitbit Charge HR, SenseWear Armband Mini) were used.
  • Criterion measures included the SenseWear Armband Mini for EE and a sleep log for SPT.

Main Results:

  • Mean absolute percent errors for EE varied across devices, with Polar Loop (PL) and Fitbit Charge HR (FC) showing better accuracy than others.
  • For SPT, Polar Loop (PL), Misfit Shine (MS), and Fitbit Flex (FF) demonstrated higher validity.
  • Equivalence testing indicated that PL and FC provided reasonable EE estimates, while PL, MS, and FF were most valid for SPT.

Conclusions:

  • Polar Loop and Fitbit Charge HR are recommended for reasonably accurate energy expenditure estimation in free-living settings.
  • Polar Loop, Misfit Shine, and Fitbit Flex are the most valid options for tracking sleep period time.
  • The findings provide valuable insights for consumers and researchers selecting wearable activity trackers.
