Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Pathology
  • Cervical Pathology
  • Cytopathology

Background:

  • Cervical polyps are common gynecologic findings.
  • Histologic evaluation is crucial for diagnosis.
  • Concurrent cytologic findings require correlation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of significant histologic findings in cervical polyps.
  • To correlate polyp histology with concurrent cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) test results.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 369 consecutive cervical polyps.
  • Histologic evaluation of polyp tissue.
  • Correlation with clinical findings and Pap test results.

Main Results:

  • 3.7% of polyps showed significant histologic findings (dysplasia, malignancy).
  • Increased incidence of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and atypical glandular cells not otherwise specified (AGC NOS) Pap diagnoses in women with benign polyps.
  • Malignant or potentially malignant features were identified in 6 cases.

Conclusions:

  • The rate of significant histologic findings in cervical polyps is higher than previously reported.
  • Removal and histologic review of all cervical polyps are warranted.
  • Elevated ASCUS and AGC Pap results may be linked to reactive changes in benign polyps.
