Background:

  • A new accredited training program for gynecologic oncology fellows has been established in Turkey.

  • Assessing the impact of training experiences on surgical confidence is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate how surgical experience influences the confidence of gynecologic oncology fellows.
  • To determine the correlation between exposure levels and self-reported confidence in performing procedures.

Main Methods:

  • 32 fellows' training adequacy, facilities, and exposure to 44 surgical procedures were assessed.
  • Exposure was categorized as performing, assisting, observing, or no exposure.
  • Confidence was measured by fellows' self-assessment of their ability to perform each procedure; correlation analysis was applied.

Main Results:

  • Fellows' confidence in performing procedures strongly correlated with their exposure level (r = 0.820, P < 0.001).
  • Performing, assisting, and observing procedures led to confidence in 97.2%, 54.1%, and 31.1% of fellows, respectively.
  • Most fellows performed hysterectomy, omentectomy, and lymphadenectomy; trachelectomy was not performed by any.

Conclusions:

  • Accredited gynecologic oncology training programs should prioritize opportunities for fellows to actively perform surgical procedures.
  • Emphasis should shift from merely assisting or observing to direct procedural experience to enhance surgical confidence.
  • Further development of training curricula may be needed to ensure comprehensive surgical skill acquisition.
