Implementing safety committees in small metal fabrication businesses significantly improved machine safety scores and lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs. This intervention effectively enhanced workplace safety and reduced OSHA citations.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Safety and Health
- Industrial Hygiene
- Workplace Safety Interventions
Background:
- Machine safety programs, including guarding and lockout/tagout (LOTO), are crucial for preventing workplace injuries in metal fabrication.
- Non-compliance with safety regulations often leads to citations from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and can result in severe injuries.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the effectiveness of a nationwide intervention aimed at improving machine safety in small metal fabrication businesses (3-150 employees).
- To evaluate the impact of safety programs on guarding and LOTO procedures.
Main Methods:
- A nationwide intervention involving insurance safety consultants was implemented.
- 160 businesses received a standardized evaluation of machine guarding, safety programs, and LOTO procedures.
- Intervention included a baseline evaluation, two visits, and a 12-month follow-up.
Main Results:
- Businesses that added a safety committee showed a 10% increase in machine safety scores (P<0.0001).
- The implementation of safety committees was associated with a 33% increase in LOTO program scores (P<0.0001).
Conclusions:
- Insurance safety consultants effectively delivered a machine safety and LOTO intervention.
- Management-employee safety committees are a successful strategy for disseminating safety interventions in small businesses.
