Summary

Persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) did not impact sleep quality or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) severity in patients with sleep-disordered breathing symptoms. The prevalence of OSAS was similar between allergic and non-allergic groups.

Background:

  • Persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) involves chronic nasal inflammation, potentially causing congestion and impacting sleep.
  • Nasal congestion from PAR can contribute to sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of PAR on sleep quality.
  • To determine the effect of PAR on the severity of OSAS.

Main Methods:

  • 150 patients with sleep apnea symptoms were evaluated.
  • 55 patients with PAR (group 1) were compared to 95 individuals without nasal disease (group 2).
  • Skin prick tests and polysomnography were conducted on all participants.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in polysomnographic parameters between groups.
  • Sleep architecture, arousal index, respiratory index, and oxygen saturation levels were comparable.
  • Prevalence of simple snoring, mild, moderate, and severe OSAS did not differ significantly between patients with and without PAR.

Conclusions:

  • The presence of PAR does not appear to affect polysomnographic parameters in patients with sleep-related breathing disorder symptoms.
  • OSAS prevalence was similar in patients with and without persistent allergic rhinitis.
