This study found higher levels of T helper 17 (Th17) cells in the blood of psoriasis patients. These findings suggest Th17 cells may play a role in psoriasis development and inflammation.
Area of Science:
- Immunology
- Dermatology
- Autoimmune Diseases
Background:
- T helper 17 (Th17) cells, a subset of CD4 T cells producing IL-17, are implicated in inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
- Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with complex immunological underpinnings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the frequency of Th17 cells and associated cytokines (IL-17A, IL-23) in the peripheral blood of psoriasis patients.
- To evaluate the relationship between Th17 cell levels, cytokine concentrations, and psoriasis disease severity.
Main Methods:
- A prospective study involving 34 psoriasis patients and 24 healthy controls.
- Quantification of circulating Th1 and Th17 cells using flow cytometry.
- Measurement of serum IL-17A and IL-23 levels via ELISA.
Main Results:
- Patients with psoriasis exhibited significantly higher frequencies of CD4+ IL-17A+ T cells in their peripheral blood (P < 0.001).
- While serum concentrations of IL-17A and IL-23 were elevated in psoriasis patients, these differences did not achieve statistical significance.
- No significant correlation was found between the studied Th17 cells or cytokines and the clinical severity of psoriasis.
Conclusions:
- Elevated levels of circulating Th17 cells and related cytokines may contribute to the skin pathology observed in psoriasis.
- These findings support the role of Th17-mediated inflammation in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
