Surveys02:16

Surveys

17.2K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Cancer-Critical Genes II: Tumor Suppressor Genes

10.0K
Genes usually encode proteins necessary for the proper functioning of a healthy cell. Mutations can often cause changes to the gene expression pattern, thereby altering the phenotype.
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
Such genes that act...

Genetic Screens02:46

Genetic Screens

5.8K
Genetic screens are tools used to identify genes and mutations responsible for phenotypes of interest. Genetic screens help identify individuals or a group of people at risk of developing  genetic diseases and help them with early intervention, targeted therapy, and reproductive options.
Forward genetic screens
Forward or “classical” genetic screens involve creating random mutations in an organism’s DNA using radiation, mutagens, or insertion of additional bases, which...

Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

8.6K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Genetics and Genomics
  • Public Health
  • Cancer Research

Background:

  • Approximately 2.5% of Ashkenazi-Jewish individuals carry founder mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1/2).
  • Current BRCA1/2 testing is limited to those with a personal or family history of cancer, missing many carriers.
  • Population-based testing identifies more mutation carriers than targeted approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the Australian Jewish community's attitudes towards a population-based BRCA1/2 testing program.
  • To assess the acceptability and interest in online education and testing for BRCA1/2 mutations within this community.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was distributed to members of Sydney-based Jewish organizations.
  • 370 individuals who identified as Jewish completed the survey.
  • Data collected included support for community testing, personal interest in testing, and preferred methods for education and consent.

Main Results:

  • Over 96% of respondents supported a community-based BRCA1/2 testing program.
  • 65.6% expressed personal interest in undergoing BRCA1/2 testing, with younger adults showing higher interest.
  • While 65.1% were comfortable with online consent, only 39.6% preferred online information delivery.

Conclusions:

  • A significant majority of the Australian Jewish community supports a community-based BRCA1/2 testing program.
  • There is substantial interest in undergoing BRCA1/2 testing, particularly among younger individuals.
  • Developing an accessible, cost-effective online program for BRCA1/2 education and testing is warranted.
