Mechanical torque-control devices (MTLDs) are more accurate than electronic torque-control devices (ETLDs) for dental implants. However, no tested device accurately achieved its target torque, highlighting a need for improved implant screw fixation accuracy.
Area of Science:
- Dental Implantology
- Biomaterials Science
- Mechanical Engineering
Background:
- Preventing dental implant screw loosening requires precise torque control to achieve adequate preload.
- Accurate torque-control devices are essential, yet comparative data on mechanical versus electronic devices is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate and compare the accuracy of various mechanical torque-control devices (MTLDs) and electronic torque-control devices (ETLDs) in a dental implant context.
Main Methods:
- Five dental implant manufacturers' devices (2 spring-type MTLDs, 2 friction-type MTLDs, 1 ETLD) were tested using a digital torque tester.
- The percentage of absolute deviations from target torque (PERDEV) was calculated and analyzed using ANOVA and t-tests.
Main Results:
- Significant differences in accuracy were found among devices (P<.001).
- Mechanical torque-control devices (MTLDs) demonstrated lower PERDEVs than electronic torque-control devices (ETLDs).
- No tested torque-control device successfully achieved its target torque value within the specified confidence interval.
Conclusions:
- Mechanical torque-control devices are more accurate than electronic ones for dental implant applications.
- Current torque-control devices exhibit limitations in achieving precise target torque values, impacting implant screw fixation.
