[Post-traumatic intramural duodenal hematoma as a cause of high ileus in a child]
Insights
Intramural duodenal hematoma can cause high ileus following trauma. Surgical revision is recommended, especially in children, to prevent fatal outcomes and ensure rapid healing.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Trauma Surgery
Background:
- Intramural duodenal hematoma is a rare but serious complication following abdominal trauma.
- High ileus, characterized by a blockage in the small intestine, can result from duodenal hematoma.
Observation:
- A case of intramural duodenal hematoma presenting with high ileus seven days post-trauma is described.
- The mechanism of injury for intramural hematoma shares similarities with duodenal perforation.
Findings:
- Surgical revision is recommended for intramural duodenal hematoma.
- Prompt surgical intervention is crucial for preventing a fatal course.
Implications:
- Early surgical drainage of duodenal hematoma facilitates rapid healing.
- This approach is particularly vital in pediatric cases due to similar injury mechanisms.
- Timely surgical management can avert life-threatening complications.
Abstract:
The authors describe the case of an intramural duodenal haematoma caused a high ileus after a seven-day post-traumatic interval. The authors recommend surgical revision, in particular in children because the mechanism of injury is the same in intramural haematoma and in duodenal perforation. Only thus it is possible to prevena a fatal course, while the operation is easy and healing after drainage of the haematoma is rapid.
