[Intravenous use of a derivative of metronidazole in abdominal surgery]
Abstract:
The authors give an account of a group of 11 patients with diffuse or circumscript peritonitis, treated by an intravenous derivate of metronidazol - Tiberal. Improvement was recorded in eight patients, three patients died. Based on their results, the authors recommend to administer metronidazol by the parenteral route combined with antibiotics effective against aerobic bacteria. In treatment they emphasize repeated bacteriological check-up examinations and an effective contact of the clinical and bacteriological department.
Insights
Intravenous metronidazole (Tiberal) showed improvement in eight of eleven patients with peritonitis. The study recommends parenteral metronidazole combined with aerobic antibiotics and regular bacteriological monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Peritonitis is a serious abdominal infection requiring effective treatment.
- Parenteral administration of antibiotics is crucial for severe infections.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous metronidazole (Tiberal) in treating peritonitis.
- To determine optimal antibiotic combinations and monitoring strategies for peritonitis.
Summary:
- Eleven patients with peritonitis received intravenous metronidazole (Tiberal).
- Eight patients showed improvement, while three did not survive.
- The study suggests combining parenteral metronidazole with aerobic antibiotics.
Impact:
- Highlights the potential of parenteral metronidazole in peritonitis management.
- Emphasizes the importance of combined antibiotic therapy and rigorous bacteriological surveillance.
- Informs clinical practice regarding peritonitis treatment protocols.
