Summary

Prostate cancer was found in 10% of deceased liver donors. Elevated PSA levels alone should not prevent organ transplantation, but suspected prostate cancer warrants excluding the organ for recipient safety.

Assessing prostate cancer prevalence in deceased liver donors is crucial for organ safety.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the incidence of prostate cancer among deceased liver donors.
To evaluate the impact of prostate cancer findings on liver graft utilization.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 784 liver procurement attempts (2012-2015).
Prostate frozen biopsy performed on 30 male donors (6.2%) prior to graft assessment.
Correlation analysis of prostate cancer with PSA levels and donor age.

Prostate cancer diagnosed in 3 of 30 (10%) donors via frozen biopsy.

Suspicion of prostate cancer in frozen biopsy led to non-utilization of the organ in 5 cases (17%).

No statistically significant difference in PSA levels or age between donors with and without prostate cancer.

Conclusions:

Elevated PSA without confirmed prostate cancer should not be an absolute contraindication for organ transplantation.
Organs from donors with suspected prostate cancer on frozen biopsy should be excluded to ensure recipient safety.
