Summary

Prostate cancer was found in 10% of deceased liver donors. Elevated PSA levels alone should not prevent organ transplantation, but suspected prostate cancer warrants excluding the organ for recipient safety.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Transplant Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Prostate cancer is a significant malignancy in Poland.
  • Assessing prostate cancer prevalence in deceased liver donors is crucial for organ safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of prostate cancer among deceased liver donors.
  • To evaluate the impact of prostate cancer findings on liver graft utilization.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 784 liver procurement attempts (2012-2015).
  • Prostate frozen biopsy performed on 30 male donors (6.2%) prior to graft assessment.
  • Correlation analysis of prostate cancer with PSA levels and donor age.

  • Prostate cancer diagnosed in 3 of 30 (10%) donors via frozen biopsy.
  • Suspicion of prostate cancer in frozen biopsy led to non-utilization of the organ in 5 cases (17%).
  • No statistically significant difference in PSA levels or age between donors with and without prostate cancer.
  • Conclusions:

    • Elevated PSA without confirmed prostate cancer should not be an absolute contraindication for organ transplantation.
    • Organs from donors with suspected prostate cancer on frozen biopsy should be excluded to ensure recipient safety.
