Erectile dysfunction (ED) in men may be linked to fat cell buildup under the tunica albuginea. This study found a significant association between sub-albuginean adipocyte accumulation and ED, suggesting a role in venous leakage.

- Eleven of 17 (65%) men with ED showed sub-albuginean adipocyte accumulation, compared to 1 of 14 (7%) in the control group (P<.05).
- An adjusted odds ratio of 40.72 (P=.012) indicated a strong association between sub-albuginean adipocyte accumulation and erectile dysfunction.
Conclusions:
- This is the first human study to demonstrate a significant association between erectile dysfunction and sub-albuginean adipocyte accumulation.
- Sub-albuginean adipocyte accumulation may contribute to the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction, potentially through venous leakage, particularly in non-responders to medical therapy.
