Background:

Bone-anchored hearing aids (Baha) are effective for aural atresia and chronic ear drainage.
Percutaneous osseointegrated implants can lead to chronic inflammation and skin complications like irritation and overgrowth.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the outcomes and complications of Baha surgery in patients with congenital external ear deformity or single-sided deafness.
To identify challenges and factors influencing Baha implantation success.

Main Methods:

Retrospective observational study of 10 patients undergoing Baha surgery between January 2010 and June 2013.
Review of case records including surgical approach (single-stage vs. two-stage) and HRCT findings.
Analysis of post-operative complications.

Main Results:

Eight patients received single-stage implants; two required two-stage due to thin bone (<3 mm).
Complications included skin infection (Holgers grade 2) in two patients and severe skin overgrowth (Holgers grade 4) in one, requiring revision surgery.
One patient experienced osseointegration failure and required re-implantation.

Conclusions:

Baha surgery presents challenges in candidate selection, anesthesia, and peri-operative management.
Skin complications and osseointegration failure can occur, necessitating careful surgical technique and diligent post-operative wound care.
