Area of Science:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Power transformers are critical infrastructure; their failures disrupt electricity supply.
  • Partial discharges (PD) in transformers can lead to catastrophic failures if not monitored.
  • Current PD monitoring methods are costly and may require system downtime.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the feasibility of using low-cost piezoelectric sensors for online, non-invasive detection of PD in power transformer mineral oil.
  • To compare the performance of these low-cost sensors against commercial acoustic emission sensors.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental setup to generate PD in mineral oil.
  • Deployment of both low-cost piezoelectric and commercial acoustic emission sensors.
  • Analysis of sensor responses in both time and frequency domains.

Main Results:

  • The proposed low-cost piezoelectric sensors effectively detected acoustic waves generated by PD.
  • Performance comparable to commercial acoustic emission sensors was observed.
  • Experimental data validated the potential of the low-cost sensors.

Conclusions:

  • Low-cost piezoelectric sensors are a viable alternative for PD detection in power transformers.
  • This technology can significantly reduce monitoring costs and improve maintenance strategies.
  • Wider adoption of non-invasive PD monitoring techniques is facilitated.
