Summary

Photopatch testing revealed that over half of patients experienced phototoxic reactions to tiaprofenic acid. Reaction severity was consistent regardless of UVA light intensity, suggesting a high sensitivity to this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Background:

  • Tiaprofenic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
  • NSAIDs can cause photosensitivity reactions.
  • Photopatch testing is a standard method for diagnosing photoallergic and phototoxic reactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the phototoxic potential of tiaprofenic acid.
  • To determine the rate of phototoxic reactions to tiaprofenic acid in patients with suspected photosensitivity.

Main Methods:

  • Photopatch testing was performed on 45 patients with suspected photosensitivity.
  • Patients were exposed to tiaprofenic acid and UVA irradiation from two sources with different energy outputs.
  • Reactions were assessed 0.5 to 48 hours post-irradiation.

Main Results:

  • Phototoxic reactions to tiaprofenic acid were observed in 23 out of 45 patients (51%).
  • The intensity and duration of reactions were similar despite variations in UVA light energy.
  • No prior exposure to tiaprofenic acid was reported by any patient.

Conclusions:

  • Tiaprofenic acid frequently causes phototoxic reactions.
  • The phototoxic reaction to tiaprofenic acid is independent of UVA light intensity within the tested range.
