Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Arthroscopy

Background:

  • External snapping hip is a condition where the iliotibial band or gluteus maximus tendon snaps over the greater trochanter.
  • Recalcitrant cases often fail to respond to conservative management, necessitating surgical intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic treatment for patients with external snapping hip resistant to conservative therapies.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of arthroscopic intervention for this condition.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 7 patients (10 cases) with refractory external snapping hip underwent arthroscopic surgery.
  • A cross-cutting with flap resection technique was employed, with additional gluteal sling release in specific cases.
  • Clinical outcomes were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS).

Main Results:

  • Significant pain reduction was observed, with VAS scores decreasing from 6.8 preoperatively to 0.2 postoperatively.
  • Functional improvement was noted, as indicated by an increase in mHHS from 68.2 to 94.8.
  • No post-operative wound complications or surgical issues were reported by any patient.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic treatment for recalcitrant external snapping hip yields encouraging clinical results.
  • The procedure demonstrated high patient satisfaction, including cosmetic outcomes.
