Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Anesthesiology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Undergraduate medical curricula often lack sufficient training in endotracheal intubation.
  • Interns have limited exposure to this critical, life-saving procedure, leading to performance deficits.
  • Inadequate endotracheal intubation skills can result in adverse patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and assess intern competency in endotracheal intubation.
  • To enhance interns' knowledge and psychomotor skills for this procedure.

Main Methods:

  • A training program involving lectures, demonstrations, and manikin-based practice was implemented for 50 medical interns.
  • Cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains were addressed through varied teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge and procedural skills were evaluated using pre/post-tests and direct observation.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in knowledge was observed, with post-test scores increasing by 34.8% (P = 0.0001).
  • Interns showed progressive skill acquisition, with 22% completing all steps on the first attempt, 62% on the second, and 16% on the third.

Conclusions:

  • The training program effectively enhanced interns' basic knowledge and manikin-based skills for endotracheal intubation.
  • Early and repeated endotracheal intubation training is recommended at the start of internship and during relevant rotations to ensure sustained competency.
