Infrared ocular thermography shows potential for dry eye disease screening. Specific temperature measurements of the nasal conjunctiva after eye opening were identified as key indicators for detecting dry eye disease.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Medical Imaging
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Dry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent condition affecting ocular surface health.
- Accurate and non-invasive diagnostic methods are crucial for effective DED management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of infrared (IR) ocular thermography as a screening tool for dry eye disease (DED).
- To identify specific thermographic metrics indicative of DED.
Main Methods:
- IR ocular thermography was conducted on 62 DED patients and 63 controls.
- A novel 'diamond' demarcation method was used for ocular surface marking and temperature acquisition.
- Static and dynamic temperature metrics were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.
Main Results:
- Absolute temperatures of the extreme nasal conjunctiva 5s and 10s post-eye opening were the most effective DED detectors.
- Sensitivity and specificity varied depending on the chosen threshold, with moderate accuracy (AUC 72-73%).
- Dynamic metrics and combined metrics did not significantly improve DED detection efficacy.
Conclusions:
- IR ocular thermography demonstrates utility in evaluating patients with dry eye disease.
- Specific static thermographic measurements show promise for DED screening.
- Further research may refine the application of IR thermography in clinical practice.
